Image threads?

I'm not sure of the best way to describe this but I was curious if there was a way to have a sort of hybrid between the forum and image gallery? What I am envisioning is having a category for say Portraits and within that someone posts a picture of their cat with a title and that is considered a "thread" that people can then post under with their own profile information like in the regular forums instead of just has quick comments similar to what you see on blog posts.
