A member of our community noticed that when initiating a new chat through member chat, users are given access to an entire list of other members registered on the website. This might work in an ideal imagined scenario, but in practice in many scenarios, it can be seen as a violation of privacy and a risk to using a website.
I do see the value in certain communities, but at the least, this should be a feature you can toggle as a designer. Maybe users are only able to chat through a button on a member's profile or if they directly type in their email.
Exposing that information is a risk on my site and it's forced me to temporarily disable the feature. I'm getting messages from users that miss the usability of the feature in the meantime. Is this being addressed at all?
Now that I've disabled the member chat feature through the floating chat bubble, it seems to have also disabled my community's private messaging functionality. Please separate these two if you can also so one can exist without the other.
A user has now reported to me that they want their account deleted because we can't protect their privacy. I think I'm going to need to disable and lose PMs now which will be a very hard reality for some users.
This is a major, MAJOR blocker for my users and I really hope you'll fasttrack a fix here. So many ways to approach it, but we really need to be able to protect general member's privacy in some forums. Most all other sites with similar functionality allow users to organically build a list based on contacts initiated on profiles discovered through posts. You aren't given an entire scrollable list of members on multiple occasions.
Please please please.
@Ofir Dagan and @Katrin Zotchev — I noticed that @Cam Papermaker isn’t getting any replies and wanted to bump this up to your notice.
Ofir, you and I have been having a conversation about the Wix Chat app — separating the “Business” chat from the “Forum” chat would be exactly what is needed.
@Cam Papermaker — if you have your users who object make their profiles private, have you tested to see if this keeps them from showing up in the chat list?
Thank you @R Griggs Wood I have considered workarounds, but anything I need to ask the entire community to do manually will likely do more damage than good. This is a vulnerability in my community and I really do need a solution here.
A more private approach to PM is an expected functionality from other websites for my users.
